{Concert with WILD ASPARAGUS}

March 7, 2010
3 PM
First Church of Christ
Hopmeadow St. Simsbury

Wild Asparagus – the nationally acclaimed contra-dance and Celtic music band, will appear in concert on March 7, 2010 at 3 PM at First Church in the meetinghouse, just in time for a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. This ain’t yer great grandpa’s barn dance music — Wild Asparagus is a great, and cutting edge, dance band in the best contra tradition. The group has been described as “one of the country’s preeminent Contra music bands,” and a “band which may well have the title of best and most innovative contra dance band in the country”. Drawing upon music from New England, the British Isles, and Canada, as well as classical sources, this group takes an original approach to the traditional dance music of America’s folk heritage. Using their unique blend of instruments, creativity, and skills, they offer a sensitive and powerful performance. With old-timey and Celtic roots of dance tradition with occasional Rhumba nuances, they go much further with their unique approaches and dynamic arrangements — which include flying riffs, syncopated counter rhythms and sometimes wild multi-ethnic instrumental harmonies, which might include horns and varieties of percussion and drums. Since 1984, Wild Asparagus has been highly successful in bringing their music to dances and concerts throughout the lower United States, Alaska and Canada. As the papers said about a recent appearance in Eugene, Oregon: “If you come to listen, you won’t be able to quite stand still…”

Concert date: March 7, 2010, at 3 p.m. Admission: $10 adults, $5 students and seniors. Tickets are available in advance through the church office and at the door, unless sold out. More information can be found at 1stchurchsimsbury.org or by calling the office 860-651-3593.
