Immigrants to the United States currently comprise 13% of the population, nearing the height of American immigration in the early twentieth century. Beginning in 1917, US lawmakers passed a series of restrictive laws that greatly curtailed immigration up until 1965. One hundred years later, immigration is an increasingly polarizing political issue with calls for greater restriction from some political leaders. Trinity Professor Abigail Fisher Williamson will discuss the history of US immigration law, how today’s immigrants differ and are similar from immigrants of the early 20th century, and explain various proposals for immigration reform.

Abigail Fisher Williamson, a professor of Political Science and Public Policy & Law at Trinity College, holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy from Harvard University. She researches and publishes on how local governments respond to immigrant populations and how these responses shape immigrant incorporation.
