Ottorino Respighi’s ‘Botticelli Pictures’ – musical descriptions of famous paintings – are a rare treat, while Igor Stravinsky’s ‘Fireworks’ and Ludwig van Beethoven’s ‘Wellington’s Victory’ sound out the colors of celebration and battle, as the lone trumpet call of Aaron Copland’s ‘Quiet City’ brings to mind the unique character of the American metropolis. These are just a few of the highly effective works we will explore that composers have written to summon up the images we have of the world around us and the emotions we feel when we summon those images.Cellist David Sims studied at the Indiana University and Yale schools of music and has performed at the Tanglewood and Waterloo festivals, as well as the North American New Music Festival in Buffalo, where he was also a faculty performer for the June in Buffalo young composer seminars. In January he was awarded an Alumni Ventures grant from the Yale School of Music allowing him to expand the scope of his music classes and offer them more widely throughout Connecticut.Reserve a seat at 860-658-7663 or www.simsburylibrary.info.

Join everyone for the fifth annual “Linda’s Litter Lugging Day” on April 21st. This happens to be the day before Earth Day, so it will be an appropriate time to help clean up our local environment.

In past years we’ve had accomplished a lot, had some fun, and really cleaned out the backlog of years of litter in some areas. It has been a real team effort . It has also been fun family time for many folks and provided an opportunity to educate children (of all ages) about not being a “litter bug!”

We will meet at the town hall parking lot between 9:00 and 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 21. Volunteers will receive a clean-up assignment, gloves, trash bags, and orange safety vests. You may also sign up for a section of road in advance, if you prefer, by calling Linda Scofield’s office860-240-8635.

The rain date is Sunday, April 22nd.

Paine’s has generously volunteered their services, and will place dumpsters and barrels in the town hall parking lot for all the recyclables and trash that volunteers collect. Refreshments will be donated by Fitzgerald’s from 11:00 to 1:00.

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more, please emailLinda.Schofield@cga.ct.gov or call 860-240-8635.

Getting through to someone in HR who you can actually talk to is a challenge for job seekers. Today most of our communication is channeled through computers. The computer forces job seekers and HR staff into a time consuming guessing game of words (a.k.a. keywords) to search for resumes and job postings. Luck, not matching skills and education, is a primary success factor to get interviews. Hennig Seip of SkillProof, will explain how to streamline your electronic job search and Internet presence in order to save time and get more interviews. You’ll learn about KRAZOOM 2, a new, free job search tool, how to discover your marketable skills and their language, how to incorporate information about your marketable skills in your Internet presence (blog, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) and how to find out what employers need and tune into it (skills alignment).
Social media is not just for kids anymore; it is playing a key role in job searches. LinkedIn is one of the more popular networking sites with millions of users. Groups based on interest are set up and have a mechanism to post job openings or to have people post requests for jobs. Even with the job postings it is still the connections that help the most. Being an active user of LinkedIn or some of the other social media sites is a critical piece in a job search. Carol Mon will teach you: How to Create a LinkedIn profile, how to search and make connections, and how to find job openings and information on companies. IMPORTANT: You must have a LinkedIn account or visitwww.linkedin.com to set up an account prior to taking this class.
