Making Memories Last Forever

Conservation Framing
As consumers, we bring our valuables in to be framed for a number of reasons. Sometimes we frame an item to create an attractive decoration for our home. On the other hand, sometimes we frame the very things that we value most – whether that be commercial or sentimental value – in order to protect them from damage. When the subject you are framing is something you treasure, you need to be sure you are getting Conservation Framing. Put simply, conservation framing employs the use of materials that have been designed to protect and maintain the art in as close to its original condition as possible. It includes:

Conservation quality matboard. Ordinary pulp-based matboard contains acids and lignin which, over a period of time, damage the artwork they come in contact with. Conservation quality matboard is free if all acids, lignins, and other impurities found in ordinary “pulp” board. The result is an inert or pH neutral board which will cause no damage to the artwork it encases as time goes by.

Conservation Series Glass. Ultra-violet light is one of the most dangerous elements that your artwork can encounter. It will not only cause you colors to fade to a mere shadow of their former glory, but it will cause the materials themselves to begin to break down right in the frame. Conservation quality picture framing glass is specially formulated to protect framed works of art from the damaging effects of ultra-violet light. Regular glass filters out less than 40% of these damaging rays, UV Conservation glass filters over 97%!

Proper Conservation techniques for mounting the artwork. The framer must utilize proper techniques and materials to attach your artwork in the frame (often called “hinging”), as well as the proper techniques for backing the art and sealing the frame.

Light and your artwork
Without light there would be no art, as light is what allows us to see and appreciate to color. It is one of the great ironies that the very thing that lets us enjoy the color also works to destroy it. Have you ever seen a faded gum wrapper or newspaper bleached or darkened to a mere fragment of its original color? Perhaps the paper had become brittle as well – ready to break apart at the touch of a finger. The damage you saw was caused by the sun…specifically, the sun’s damaging UV, or ultra-violet, rays. These are the same UV rays your doctor warns you about. They cause breakdown whenever they come in contact with organic materials, burning noses, bleaching gum wrappers, and ruining your daughter’s first finger-painting. The damaging effects of UV light on artwork are cumulative and irreversible. Unfortunately, the sun is not the only source of harmful UV light. All light sources, whether natural or artificial, have some of their components in the ultraviolet range.

All this talk about UV damage would seem to spell certain doom for your artwork, but thankfully, there is a fairly recent development in glass technology, known as Conservation Series Glass, which effectively blocks out 97% of all harmful UV rays. The cost is marginal, and the benefits are great. This glass is available in both clear and reflection control.

flowers1Perfect Bridal Flowers

If time permits, contact your local florist ten to twelve months before the wedding. This way, you can be assured they have the date open, especially if you are in prime wedding season (June – September). Most florists have a charge for holding the date.

Once you have the color and style of the dresses for your wedding, call your florist to set up a consultation. It will be helpful for the florist if you bring pictures from magazines of the types of flowers, colors and arrangements you like. The florist will have pictures of past work to show you as well, so that they can get to know your likes and dislikes.

Most florists have a wide selection of flowers of varying prices. It is simple to create beautiful arrangements on any budget. Professional florists usually have floral designers on staff who attend training for the most up-to-date trends. They can create just the right floral display for your wedding, whether it’s an intimate or large event.

It’s important to remember that florists are working with a perishable product. So, during the consultation, it would be helpful to give them an idea of the look and feel you want to create, rather than simply picking a particular type of flower. Most professional florists are very flexible. If you change your mind about a color or style for the flowers, they will be able to accommodate you. The florist will start ordering your flower two to three weeks prior to your wedding. Please don’t make any major changes the month before your wedding.

Besides flowers, florists are now becoming a one-stop shop for wedding décor. You can usually order decorating needs for the ceremony (lights, arches, pedestals, candles) from your florist as well as wedding favors (plants, candy, balloons, baskets).

The most important tip – you need to feel comfortable with the florist you select. The flowers are an integral part of your special day. The flowers are perishable and will not last forever, but the photographs and memories will. Your flowers should not be an afterthought, but an important part of your wedding day. Your personal, professional florist is there to help you realize your dream.

Countdown to Beautiful

5 – 6 months before

Want to grow out your hair or try a new color or cut? Talk to your stylist and start experimenting now.

Get serious skin care: Start a good cleansing and moisturizing program and consider making appointments for monthly facials.

3 – 4 months before

Bring pictures of hairstyles you like and your veil and headpiece to your stylist. If you want to wear your hair in an up-do, discuss with your stylist how long it will take to grow out your hair so it’s the right length for your desired look.

When considered your hairstyle, remember, it should compliment your gown, not compete with it.

Make consultation appointments with potential make-up artists. Be sure to take pictures and then analyze them. Do your features stand out? Do you look like you’re wearing a mask?

Decide on a make-up artist and book her/him for your wedding date. Set up a day-of-wedding schedule.

Decide on your hair stylist and book her/him for your wedding date. Set up a day-of-wedding schedule.

1 – 2 months before

Meet with your make-up artist for a trial run.

Bring your veil to your hair stylist for a trial run. If you’re not happy, now’s the time to make changes.

Ever consider having your eyebrows professionally shaped? Now’s the time to try it.

If you haven’t started a facial program a few months ago, consider getting a facial now.

2 weeks before

Get your final haircut or trim. No experimenting here, just stick to the look you love.

Exfoliate and moisturize. Talk to your salon about products. Soft and silky elbow, hands and feet are marriage musts.

Drink lots of water to help keep your skin clear and glowing.

Confirm big-day beauty appointments.

Remind your man to get his final trim 1 Week before.

Get a bikini and leg wax and a final eyebrow shaping.

Get a massage to relax. A good idea for your fiancé too.

Get a final facial. Don’t wait until the last day to do this as your face will need a day or two to get back to normal.

1 day before

Drink lots of water.

Pack your emergency beauty kit.

Deep condition your hair.

Exfoliate your skin.

Have your nails done and get a pedicure.

On Your Wedding Day

ring1Custom Made Wedding Jewelry
Are you looking for custom created wedding bands for you and your fiance? Maybe you would like some unique and special jewelry for your bridal party. When it comes to our most important jewelry, many of today’s women are looking for a way to express their personal taste in that once in a lifetime choice. At Sarah Byrnes, our custom design service will help you create those special wedding bands you will enjoy wearing forever.

At Sarah Byrnes, Goldsmith, we create jewelry to appeal to a wide range of tastes and styles using several different processes. A piece of jewelry can be hand fashioned or “Fabricated” using pieces of gold, silver or platinum in sheet and wire. Another process called “LostWax Casting” is where a wax model is carved by Sarah, invested in a plaster casing, and burned out in a high temperature oven. It is then cast with molten metal in Gold, Platinum or Silver. When the process is finished, you have a one of a kind piece of jewelry that is ready for the addition of stones and/or textures,
made especially for you.

“I wanted something special. I didn’t think I could afford a custom ring and I didn’t have a clue how the process worked. All it took was a conversation with Sarah and Kim at Sarah Byrnes. They took my scattered vision, walked me through the design process and created something that exceeded any expectation I had. It is without question the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen. I felt like I was dealing with family, they really cared and put so much thought and love into it.”
~ A. Dinerstein, a satisfied customer

We have been helping our customers with their jewelry needs and desires for over 15 years in our shop, at The Simburytown Shops, in Simsbury, CT. Our clients may choose us for our expertise in jewelry design and construction, but our friendly, family style customer service keeps them coming back for all the special occasions in their lives. It is always our privilege to be part of so many happy occasions in our customers lives.

Tips:

We are always ready to clean and inspect your jewelry. This may save you costly repairs or possibly devastating losses, and will keep your jewelry looking its very best. We recommend stopping in regularly, every 3 to 6 months, for a jewelry “Spa Visit” so we can check to be sure your stones are tight and your setting is wearing well.

Before you wear a family heirloom, we suggest you bring it in for inspection as it may be in need of some restoration work from years of loving wear.

When wearing your jewelry, avoid chlorine bleach and harsh abrasives – they can cause damage without you being aware.

Pearls should always be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Avoid using perfume, hairspray and makeup in areas where pearls are worn as these will cause damage to the surface of the pearls.Wipe your pearls off with a clean, dry cotton cloth before putting them away.

When creating jewelry, the choices you make regarding metals and stones should reflect not only your personal style, but wear ability for your lifestyle as well. After all, jewelry should be worn, not tucked away in a box waiting for another special occasion.
