If time permits, contact your local florist ten to twelve months before the wedding. This way, you can be assured they have the date open, especially if you are in prime wedding season (June – September). Most florists have a charge for holding the date.

Once you have the color and style of the dresses for your wedding, call your florist to set up a consultation. It will be helpful for the florist if you bring pictures from magazines of the types of flowers, colors and arrangements you like. The florist will have pictures of past work to show you as well, so that they can get to know your likes and dislikes.

Most florists have a wide selection of flowers of varying prices. It is simple to create beautiful arrangements on any budget. Professional florists usually have floral designers on staff who attend training for the most up-to-date trends. They can create just the right floral display for your wedding, whether it’s an intimate or large event.

It’s important to remember that florists are working with a perishable product. So, during the consultation, it would be helpful to give them an idea of the look and feel you want to create, rather than simply picking a particular type of flower. Most professional florists are very flexible. If you change your mind about a color or style for the flowers, they will be able to accommodate you. The florist will start ordering your flower two to three weeks prior to your wedding. Please don’t make any major changes the month before your wedding.

Besides flowers, florists are now becoming a one-stop shop for wedding décor. You can usually order decorating needs for the ceremony (lights, arches, pedestals, candles) from your florist as well as wedding favors (plants, candy, balloons, baskets).

The most important tip – you need to feel comfortable with the florist you select. The flowers are an integral part of your special day. The flowers are perishable and will not last forever, but the photographs and memories will. Your flowers should not be an afterthought, but an important part of your wedding day. Your personal, professional florist is there to help you realize your dream.
